The idea is to be able to express a prediction that is genuinely an extreme threat. I would expect your belief to actually match how frightened you get in the situation. If anyone else believed what you do in this situation, would they be just as anxious as you? If the answer is ‘yes’ then you have probably found your worst fear. If the answer is ‘no’ then you may not have expressed it quite right. For example if I were to take a flight on a jet aircraft, I may fear that I won’t be able to cope with the anxiety. But what does ‘not coping’ really mean to me? Actually, when I really imagine going on that plane, I have an image of myself losing control of my behaviour and being restrained by the other passengers, and then being rejected and shunned by them. This is my worst case scenario which I ‘fast-forward’ to, and I have a vivid image of it in my mind – and this is what I am really thinking might happen. I can now begin to understand why I get anxious on planes. Of course the worst case scenario is very different for different people. Your worst fear will be different, depending on your past experiences and what is going on for you at the moment.
The questions should help you to identify what you think is the worst thing that could happen. The next stage is to rate how much you believe this. It may be that you think this is very unlikely to happen in the first step you have suggested. However, if you even believe it a tiny amount then this is a start – you can test this belief out for the first time rather than behaving as if it actually might be true. The table includes a section to note the ‘percentage belief rating’. So, if you are convinced, that would be 100 per cent, and 50 per cent would be that there is a 50:50 chance of it happening – the same as the chance of a coin coming up ‘heads’. A score of 0 per cent is reserved for when you are convinced that the worst fear would never happen.
